A church bulletin sat next to the open page, and John 1 did not need much decoration.

I read it slowly because I have a bad habit of making familiar words too easy. A verse can become furniture if a person only walks past it.

What helped was leaving it near the ordinary work: the sink, the bill, the shoes by the door. The words had to live there or they were only sound.

I do not think every reading has to end with certainty. Sometimes it is enough for a line to make the next hour a little more honest.
